What differentiates a qualified, professional appraisal?

Many people, such as art dealers offer appraisal services…. that’s fine if you just want to know the value. But when it comes to purposes such as those listed on this page, you will certainly need what’s known as a qualified appraisal. Such professional appraisals are written according to standards dictated by organizations such as ISA, ASA, and the Appraisal Foundation. They are formal, defensible documents relied upon by attorneys, trustees, executors, estates, courts, the IRS, and insurance companies. These entities require that an appraisal meet these standards. A professional appraiser goes through training, testing and continuing education to do so.

Professional appraisals are also tailored to the particular needs of the client. The intended use determines how it will be done in consideration of what entities will be referring to that document. And not all appraisals are crafted in the same manner. For example, an appraisal for Federal purposes needs to be composed differently than one for insurance purposes.
